As your student prepares to enroll for the upcoming term, review their next steps as you guide them through this process. Additional information can also be found on our accepted students website and in your student’s acceptance packet.
Student Checklist
If your student has not done so already, make sure that they submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. New York State residents will also need to apply for TAP and the NYS Excelsior Scholarship, if eligible. Instructions for how to apply for financial aid can be found on the Financial Aid Office website.

Buffalo State also offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for current, newly accepted first-year, and transfer students.
Your Buffalo State student be signing in to several online systems like Banner, email, Brightspace, Degree Works and Navigate 360. These accounts may be activated 24 hours after your student has secured their spot.

In order to register for classes, all students must be in compliance with New York State law regarding immunizations. The New Student Health Form must be completed by all new students. Additional information about immunization requirements for students can be found on the Weigel Health Center website.
First-Year Students
All first-year students will be assigned to a Professional Advisor, who will provide academic guidance, help them select their courses, and assist them as they adjust to student life. Your student will need to complete the pre-advisement survey located under the Enrollment tab in their applicant portal. This information is then sent to their Professional Advisor who will work with them to create their schedule.
Transfer Students
Transfer students will need to complete the Transfer Tutorial Modules located under the Enrollment tab in their applicant portal. Once they successfully complete all modules, they will receive their temporary advising pin via e-mail and instructions on advisement. Transfer students with 44 credits or less will be assigned a Professional Transfer Advisor. Transfer students with 45 credits or more will be assigned a Faculty Advisor in their major.
Orientation is mandatory for all new incoming students. Students will be notified via e-mail when orientation registration is open and will be able to sign up through their student portal after they have secured their spot. Parents and support networks have the option to participate in orientation concurrent with their student.
Orientation, Transition, and Family Programs
Students will be notified via e-mail when the housing application is open. The application is available to students 48 hours AFTER they have submitted their tuition deposit. Students will apply for their housing and meal plan through Banner. The priority housing deadline is June 1 or 30 days after acceptance. After the deadline, spots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
- First-year students who live more than 35 miles from Buffalo State are required to live on campus.
- Commuter students who wish to live on campus must contact the Residence Life Office to activate their housing application.
NOTE: Students who are under the age of 18 need parental consent to live on campus. The designated parents/guardian will receive an e-mail once their student has submitted their housing application for approval. This is required in order to successfully complete the housing application process.
Priority housing deadline: June 1 or 30 days after acceptance
Students must submit their final, official high school transcript to the Admissions Office as proof of high school completion. Failure to do so will result in a hold on the student's account. Federal aid cannot disburse until the final high school transcript has been received.
Transcripts can be sent electronically or by mail.
NOTE: All transcripts must come directly from the high school to be considered official.

Students will need to request that their official score reports be sent directly to us. Exam scores will be evaluated and all eligible credits will be applied to your student’s Buffalo State degree.
All college transcripts must be sent directly from the college or university in order for them to be considered official. Students can contact the institution’s Registrar/Bursar Office directly or request their transcript through Parchment.
New Bengal Orientation at Buffalo State University engages students in immersive programming and presentations to become fully prepared for their first semester while creating friendships and connections within their new Bengal family.
Orientation will be held on various dates throughout the summer.
NOTE: Orientation is required for all first-year, transfer, and international students, with an optional program for parent and family members.
Move-in for new students will occur during the week before the start of the semester. (Note: ROAR 2 Success students will move into their assigned residence hall as part of the R2S Summer Bridge Program.) Information about roommate and housing assignments, what to bring for their room, and move-in will be sent to students via their Buffalo State e-mail.
